Yoga Nidra
What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a conscious state between waking and dreaming. It is an ancient technique that uses guided meditation to induce the brain into a specific state. This space between waking and dreaming allows your brain to enter Alpha and Theta brain waves which allows your nervous system to regulate and promotes benefits such as improved memory.
“A recent study showed that while meditation and yoga nidra were both effective in reducing stress and anxiety, yoga nidra was more effective at reducing anxiety. The study also suggested that yoga nidra can be a useful tool for reducing both the cognitive and physiological symptoms of anxiety.” Published in the National Library of Medicine
The Science of Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra activates the pineal gland, which releases the hormone melatonin. It also calms the sympathetic nervous system, and actives the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for our ‘rest and digest’ functions, such as organ function, digestion, the immune system and stress management. This can regulate cortisol levels, blood pressure and hormones.
yoga nidra is a practice that invites you to visit the cosmic space between waking and dreaming. yoga nidra is proven to increase brain function, reduce symptoms of stress. the practice invites a guided dreamlike practice of deep listening to enter the subconscious, to attune to the midbrain and limbic systems, where memory and the subconscious are stored, where perceptions of pain and pleasure are housed.
you are invited to lay down or sit however is comfortable. cushions, blankets and a quiet space are recommended but not necessary. if at any point you have entered too deeply, or feel unsafe in any way, i invite you to move your toes or fingers to come back to your senses or find a grounding object to help you come back to the space. you have control to adjust your experience however you choose. everything i say is suggestion and may be interpreted to fit your needs.
