Acupuncture has proven an effective adjunct treatment in fertility medicine. Not only is acupuncture an effective way to manage stress and anxiety throughout the fertility process, acupuncture is clinically effective to improve results.
Research has shown that acupuncture has increased pregnancy rates, ovulation rates, and has reduced the rate of miscarriages among women with infertility. Acupuncture works by improving blood flow, balancing hormones, regulating cortisol, which can thicken uterine lining and improve egg quality. Acupuncture also helps manage side effects commonly associated with fertility medication.
Acupuncture has been effective in increasing results when used as an adjunct therapy to IVF transfer. Research has shown acupuncture treatment increased clinical pregnancy rates by 28-32%, ongoing pregnancy rate by 42% and live birth rate by 30%, compared to no acupuncture treatment. Favourable outcomes were linked to higher doses of acupuncture and same day acupuncture treatment as embryo transfer.
